I never went camping as a child. I don't think my parents were up to it. We did the amusement parks and things like that. However, when I got older I started camping a lot with my friends. Now that I am a parent, I am wondering about taking my kids camping. What ages do you think are appropriate for camping?

I never camped till now too. But my parents went out camping when I was a little boy. I was a year of 10. I think you shouldn't do it with kids under 6-7. Because maybe to little and mainly too timeconsuming to profit of the "camping" itself.
Just my 2 cents...

I have seen younger lids gone camping.
But I do agree. 6 is a great starting age.

Our daughter was about 9 months old on the first trip of this year.
Everything went great and she seemed to enjoy the outdoors.
Of course if you are really roughing it then this would be way to young. We have a camper so it makes it a lot easier with the children.

Although we didn't take our son until he was 3 years old, I believe that you can take a newborn camping as long as you're equipped for it. My sister and her husband often take their son camping (and kayaking! ), and little Eli is only just now 9 months old. We were camping with a large group a couple of weeks ago and one couple brought their 8-week old baby. They had a perfectly wonderful time.

Woow this makes it more difficult Seems to be some pros and contras for young babies. I know you always can take them too, but little borns are time-consuming. I know this even now at home !

It really depends on the child and the parents. If your children enjoy the outdoors and you have the patience I think it's really your call. I have two daughters 1 & 6 and they both have been camping 4 times this year and they did great. We fished and went swimming. I think if you plan some activities for your children and make good choices for camp grounds (with playgrounds) you should be fine. Also when they go to bed that leaves time for the adults to enjoys the fire and such.

Woow thanks Jennifer. That sounds great advice.
Of course it is much better not to go away when one of the kids is sick....

I have three girls, ages 12, 11 and 6 and we have been camping with them for about 4 years. As they get older, it becomes more fun because they can do more stuff like riding bikes, swimming and hiking. I think as long as you are well packed and prepared (mentally and emotionally), you can take a child at any age. I think they will learn to appreciate the outdoors more if you start early. Just think about the activities you want to do as a family when selecting a campground. www.youcancamp.com

We bought a Jayco tent trailer this past summer and have gone on 3 trips with it. Once to the mountains and twice we did the beach camping thing. My daughter is 6 and she had a blast on all 3 trips. Jennifer has some good points here. If you have activities planned and if the campground has a playground you are golden. We have found that it is more fun for our daughter if we go with people who also have kids so that she has someone to play with.

My oldest son is 4 and he has done very well in the back yard scenario. I thought it would be a good idea to try that route a few nights before going far afield.

I went camping as early as 9 years old. In my opinion that was the right time. I was able to absorb everything in at that time. I learned to appreciated the views and outdoors. I think it just depends on each person. Sometime bring a baby can be a lot of work.

Great question. I'm planning a trip for this summer with my six years old. So far I'm planning on the normal fishing, hiking and the like. Of course, I plan on bringing his leapster in case in rains along with some board games in stuff. I went camping all the time when I was a kid with my family and I haven't been able to yet with my kids. My wife and 9 month old aren't joining me for this trip, but I hope that they'll come for future trips. This is my first post, but so far I love the forum! If you're interested, I've created a blog about my preparation of my trip. The url is listed below and any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated. Eric http://www.familycampman.com
