Located near Cordele, Georgia - a large well-appointed State Park with three loops for camping - two are basically for RV use, the third mixed RV and tenting. Right on Lake Blackshear - 9 miles west of I-75 (exit #101) near Cordele on U.S. Hwy. 280.
With a swimming beach, a nature trail, golf, a Marina and restaurant on the grounds, with two gas station/convenience stores across the highway (and one has a full meat market!). There is also a nice little military museum on the grounds near the entrance with several old aircraft, tanks and artillery pieces on display for the military buffs.
They do enforce 'quiet hours' at night, so our tenting trip was peaceful.
Very near by is Andersonville, with it's National POW Museum and the old "Camp Sumter" Confederate POW camp. A somewhat somber and depressing place, but still an important part of our nation's history.
Also close to Plains, home of Jimmy Carter. We toured the old school building housing his historical stuff, and nearby is brother Billy Carter's old gas station. This town lives & breathes the Carter family! Don't forget to try the Peanut Butter Icecream!
Up in Montezuma, Georgia, we ate dinner at "Yoders", a Mennoite-owned and run restaurant serving good food cafeteria-style.
http://www.gastateparks.org/GeorgiaVetMyself and four buddies rode our motorcycles up there from Tallahassee, Fl, for three nights at the CG. A nice picturesque ride up and down as we took the local roads, and avoided the Interstate. Lots of farmland.
Two of our riders did a Sunday daytrip over to Columbus, to tour the Army Infantry Museum and the Civil War Naval Museum. They rated the CW Naval Museum as especially interesting.
